Undrallu, are delicious, savory rice and lentil dumplings, enjoyed as a special dish on Lord Ganesha’s birthday. Coincidentally, today, the 10th of Sept 2021 happens to be Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chavithi in Telugu), which marks Lord Ganesha’s birthday. Happy Ganesh Chaturthi!
Lord Ganesha
Undoubtedly, Lord Ganesha is one of the most popular Indian Gods. Even if you’re not too familiar with Indian mythology, I’m sure you would have seen images of this Elephant God at some point. I have a huge collection of Ganesha figurines that I’ve collected over the years. They are so fascinating – made from different materials, with vivid colors and shapes. I have one tiny Ganesha on my car console too. One of my friends gifted it to me and said it would keep me safe😊.

Ganesh Chaturthi
Growing up in India, I remember celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi every September. My mom would make a bunch of special dishes like Hesarubele Payasa, Pulihara (tamarind rice), Coconut Tomato Chutney and so on. Legend has it that you need to listen to Lord Ganesha’s story on this day, so you have a happy, successful year ahead. Mom would read it out to us, followed by a short prayer, offering all the delicious dishes to the Lord, before we dug in. My sister and I would start eating even before the table was set – we simply couldn’t wait!

Undrallu
Apparently Undrallu was one of Lord Ganesha’s all-time favorite dishes. He would stuff himself with these and wouldn’t have room for anything else (oh, the fascinating Indian mythological stories)! Incidentally, this is one of my favorite dishes too, though I have it only on this festival day, mostly. I believe they are called undrallu because of their round (undram) shape.
I love the simplicity of this dish. It has basic tempering, cooked with rice rawa (coarse rice flour) and chana dal. Check out our recipe Uppudupindi, which is somewhat similar. I love pairing Undrallu with Coconut Tomato Chutney, although there are several other chutneys which could taste great with this dish.
Why is this Healthy?
Undrallu is a great breakfast or snack dish, since it is light, yet filling. Rice rawa is easy to digest, and chana dal are a great vegetarian protein source.

Undrallu | Kudumulu Recipe
Undrallu are mildly spiced rice and lentil dumplings, that make for a delicious breakfast or a snack between meals! Enjoy with Fresh Coconut Tomato Chutney.

Ingredients
- 1 Cup Rice Rawa
- 1/4 Cup Chana Dal
- 2 Teaspoons Cumin Seeds
- 1 Tablespoon Ghee - Check for homemade version here
- 1/2 Teaspoon Sea Salt - Or to taste
- 1.5 Cups Filtered water
Instructions
Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds and chana dal.
As the cumin seeds start crackling, add rice rawa and stir until it is very lightly browned.
Add water, salt, mix well and cook for 7 to 9 minutes, ensuring all water evaporates and no lumps remain. Transfer to a large plate and allow it to cool.
Take small portions into your palm and make round balls. Serve with Fresh Coconut Tomato Chutney.
